Beaches And Islands

Miles and Miles of Sandy Beaches

From miles of beautiful golden sandy beaches to spectacular rugged cliffs, Northumberland has a hugely diverse coastline to explore.

The stunning beaches at Bamburgh and Alnmouth are often voted as some of the best in the country – so don’t forget your bucket and spade! If exploring rock-pools and the thrill of fossil hunting is more your thing, a trip to Howick or Cocklawburn Beach could supply you with a treasure to take home.

The Holy Island of Linsdisfarne makes for a great day out. Accessible only when tide conditions allow (please check before setting off and time your return carefully here), this small island was the birthplace of Christianity in England during the middle-ages.

Visit the remains of the monastery where the Lindisfarne Gospels originated and which was destroyed by Vikings in 793 AD, as well as the distillery producing traditional mead and other gifts to stock up on.

Accessible by a short boat trip from  Seahouses, the Farne Islands are a National Trust managed group of islands that are a designated nature reserve. With huge colonies of puffins and other sea birds as well as one of the largest colonies of grey seals in the country, the Farne Islands make a unique destination for a day out. It’s also a sobering thought to think that around these islands lie hundreds of shipwrecks from all eras, including that of the Forfarshire, from which Grace Darling and her father performed a heroic rescue of her crew in 1838.

Wish we were there longer! Beautiful cottage; well-equipped, clean, warm with stunning grounds. Short drive to the Bosk/Breamish valley spa and the running fox at Powburn. Will definitely book again.

Lovely cosy cottage, well equipped and very clean. A fantastic place to get away from it all. The log burner was a bonus after cold, blustery days out walking. The gardens are stunning and felt so lucky to be able to explore them, especially the walled garden.
