Things To Do

Activities & Experiences

For the keen walker, you are spoilt for choice. We are situated just on the edge of the Northumberland National Park with access to some of the finest walking in the country in the Cheviot Hills. Such expanses mean that often you will be more likely to come across a wild goat on the hills rather than another human being! The Coquet, Ingram and College Valleys all provide amazing walking through truly unique landscapes rich in history and wildlife. If you’d like to take a guided walk or organised ramble, then take a look at the selection offered by local business Shepherds Walks.

For the cyclist, the county is blessed with some of the quietest roads and some of the most challenging off-road natural trails. Bike hire (including electric bikes) is available from a number of outlets including Coquet Bikes & The Bike Place. If you are keen for a challenge, the annual Naughty Northumbrian mountain bike festival will test you and your machine to the limit!

Northumberland is a land of hills and valleys, and meandering their way through those valleys are ribbons of wild water full of fish. Well, in the case of migratory salmon and sea trout, sometimes! The River Coquet is a famous salmon river and when the time and conditions are right, produces some spectacular sport. Day tickets can be obtained from the Northumbrian Angler’s Federation. Well-stocked still waters abound such as nearby Thrunton Long Crag and there are numerous opportunities to take a rod on a boat from Amble or Seahouses.

Northumberland is host to some fabulous golf courses featuring some of the most stunning and dramatic landscapes. Nearby, and providing coastal views along the beach is a charming 9 hole links course, Alnmouth Village Club that is England’s oldest 9 hole links course, designed by Scottish golfer Mungo Park, winner of the British Open. Further up the coast and set amongst the sand dunes is another 9 hole gem of a course at Warkworth. Both courses are circa 25 mins from Glanton. Further afield but by far the stand-out course in the county is Goswick Golf Club, another links course nestled amid the windswept dunes and vast expanse of coastline. Goswick is a James Braid masterpiece, is ranked in the top 50 UK courses and is an Open Qualifier course. There are also other courses in nearby, Wooler, Rothbury, and Alnwick.

And for those adventurous spirits that really want to see the county from unique viewpoints, why not take a glider flight from Millfield or book a place on a dive charter to play with the seals and explore the wrecks off the Farne Islands finished off with a sea kayak adventure around the sea-stacks at Berwick . Phew, that’s me exhausted just writing about it.

At Glanton Pyke we strive to make your stay as fulfilling and unforgettable as possible. If you have any questions at all about activities in the region, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Wish we were there longer! Beautiful cottage; well-equipped, clean, warm with stunning grounds. Short drive to the Bosk/Breamish valley spa and the running fox at Powburn. Will definitely book again.

Lovely cosy cottage, well equipped and very clean. A fantastic place to get away from it all. The log burner was a bonus after cold, blustery days out walking. The gardens are stunning and felt so lucky to be able to explore them, especially the walled garden.
